Last Song

A tentative text. A meeting on neutral ground. A cup of coffee.

Meeting an ex is always… something.

Staring at someone who you used to know so well, whose every laugh line you used to have memorized, whose face was more familiar to your own. To go from that, to go from someone who knew every bit of your heart, who you traded secrets with, to now, someone you keep yourself guarded around… It’s hard.

There’s plenty of reasons to see someone you used to love for a catch-up. So many of us hope for that all-elusive feeling of closure. Sometimes, we find it. Sometimes, we don’t.

On one spring day, I found it.

I left coffee feeling settled, walked straight to the piano, and, an hour later, this was written. I’m not kidding—lyrics, chords, and all. I just felt the feeling move through me and come out the way it needed to.

I know the song isn’t perfect—is any work ever perfect? But, I’ll forever cherish this one. It was a moment born of pure feeling and catharsis. It helped me process my feelings and come out the other side all the better. It was finishing the hat.
