Burn
“Burn” was the lead single that I released from my EP. It was the first thing people heard, it was the first taste of what I could do—and I still love it a whole lot to this day.
Being a songwriter (really, a creator of any sort) is tricky. You create something out of, well, whatever; a moment of inspiration, a need for catharsis, or just a hook you’ve got stuck in your head that you’ve got to pin down. You work and you work and then you put something out and then, well, sometimes you really hate it. It happens!
Sometimes, though, if you’re lucky, you get something that’s good. The kind of thing you feel proud to stand behind, the sort of thing you hope other people think of when they think of you.
That’s “Burn” for me.
It might be one of the songs I’m proudest of. It was born out of a moment of catharsis, an attempt to pin down the explosive, burning quality of something in a relationship, and then it was, as a lot of work is, finished over many hours bent over a piano, drafting and re-drafting, working the words and music out until they made sense. I’m grateful for every crumpled up piece of paper that led to this song (oh yeah, I write my music down, real old school), because it gave me “you taste like sin/let’s make the room spin” which I cannot tell you how much I love.
The song, at its core, is about a hookup—but you knew that, didn’t you? It’s not exactly subtle. It’s about finally giving in, finally tasting what you’ve been yearning for, what you think might set you on fire—but you don’t care. You’ve chugged the vanilla vodka, you’ve been flirting around this for weeks, you’re a pile of kindling, and that other person is a match—and you’re all too ready to burn.
