On My Mind
If “Crush” was all about the heart-stopping, breathtaking, overwhelming infatuation that is a crush, “On My Mind” is a sort of (hopefully) natural progression of that same first brush of love.
The song is a bit more laid back, though, at first glance, the production and overall sound is similar to “Crush”. It’s a truly just a simple, laid-back, but still pop-y number about liking someone. But there’s a difference between the sort of like that leaves you fluttering and the sort of like that sits easily on your mind, the kind that keeps you company, the sort that is a gentle accompaniment to your day, the kind you don’t mind having around—in fact, I sing just that in the chorus.
The real sort of kicker, however, is the last bit of the chorus—in fact, they’re the last words of the song. “Cuz I like you on my mind/Baby say I’m on yours tonight” is the hopeful, tentative, questioning ending to the phrase. The object of your affection is firmly on your mind, all the time, day and night, and now, you’re just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her—I’m kidding. But it is that vibe! That hopeful sort of rush, just hoping that that other person is the somebody that somebody else is longing to see.
