Hopelessly Devoted to You
Alright, so we’ve covered a lot of emotions—the enormity of living alone, the all-consuming thrill of infatuation, the slow descent into love, and reaching a boiling point—er, burning point, I should say.
Now? Now, we’re in full-blown, head-over-heels, completely gone, absolutely besotted… in a mildly concerning way.
Eighteen and nineteen year olds are not really known for making the best, most well-balanced decisions about love.
I can vouch for that.
“Hopelessly Devoted to You” is both winking at sickeningly sweet and saccharine flavor of infatuation, and indulging in it. It’s all about being hopelessly devoted to the person you’re in love with, past the point of no return, while also looking back at that sort of devotion with a wiser eye.
I’ve written many a jazz song, I’ve performed many a jazz song. I love jazz. Not to alarm anyone, but “Whiplash” was basically my high school’s music program. Perhaps one day, I’ll write the perfect jazz song, maybe polish up one of the many jazz compositions I wrote in one of classes. But, until then, I have this number, that both parodies the genre and is an ode to it.
